Regensburg is a city of outstanding historic significance and one of Germany’s best preserved medieval cities, dating back to the time of the Celts. Established during the Holy Roman Empire and the only German city not bombed during WWII. Regensburg has at least 1,300 listed buildings of “historic interest” and, since 2006, holds the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A guided walking tour will show you the city’s architectural highlights, including the Old Town Hall and the Porta Praetoria, gate to an ancient Roman fort built in 179 A.D. Wander through the city’s lanes and alleys to discover the many mansions with the high towers. Wealthy families built these towers to emphasize their status and wealth during the Middle Ages, and many still remain today. Walk across the 12th-century Steinerne Brücke (Stone Bridge), the oldest of its kind in Germany.

Linz is an important river port and the second largest city in Austria. Here, culture plays a significant role in everyday life. Composer Anton Bruckner lived here, and Mozart’s Linzer Symphony was composed in the city. In Linz you can still find traces of the Roman era here, while the old town centre boasts elegant Renaissance courtyards and Baroque churches. See the 13th-century Hauptplatz, Austria’s largest medieval square, and the Trinity Column, built in 1723 as thanks for the city escaping the ravages of the plague, war, and fire. Wander around the old castle grounds and take in the beautiful views of the river, or visit the neo-gothic New Cathedral, Austria’s largest church, with capacity for 20,000 visitors. Taste the local specialty, the Linzer Torte, a spicy cake with a jam filling.
